At the beginning of this article, the author introduced a lot about the Great Salt Lake especially on the rise of the level of Great Salt Lake. In order to make the boring geographic depiction lively, the author cited an all-known experiement in school to illustrate the characteristic of the lake. Also, the specific experiement enable us to understand the variety of area and volume of the lake better. Besides that, the author specialized a lot of exact numbers to show the rise of water level, and one of them, which is the water level that meant the flooding of the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, is the number that the author really cared about. It smoothly lead up to the following paragraphs which are about Refuge and her family. In addition, the details introduced above claimed the importance of water level change to the Rufuge which is the main point of this article.

I agree with you that the main point of the essay is about the effects of increase in water level of Salt lake. I don't like too many numbers in an essay so it was boring for me to read those but I understood its importance later and appreciate that she provided physical explanations to give a better understanding. But she could have used lesser number of numbers to make her point more effective or should have used them after her short stories.
